An Anchorage, Ak., Soldier is competing in the Army Reserve’s prestigious “Best Warrior Competition” at Fort McCoy, Wis., 13-17 July.  Spc. Oliver C. Thompson, a mechanic with the 279th Engineer Company located at Ft. Richardson, Ak., is one of only 28 of the 206,000-strong Army Reserve to be selected to compete.  

Thompson was 2008’s Soldier of the Year for the 9th Military Support Command (MSC), the 3,300-person command covering a large part of the Pacific, including Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Japan and Korea.  

“He consistently distinguishes himself,” said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Botelho, Thompson’s platoon sergeant. “He is a team player, dedicated to the success of not only his unit, but the Army Reserve as a whole.”

“I am competing to prove to myself I can go farther and push harder than I thought possible,” said Thompson.  “I look forward to representing my command.
